Back to School: How Insulated Metal Panels Support Educational Facilities

West Bedford School
West Bedford School in Nova Scotia demonstrates how our IMPs can create a playful and high-performing educational facility. The campus serves approximately 2,000 students from pre-primary through Grade 12. With such a wide range of ages using the building, the project called for an exterior that would feel modern and inviting without appearing too institutional.
More than 50,000 square feet of Kingspan IMPs were used on the project. KS Mini Micro-Rib panels in Ascot White and Charcoal established a sleek backdrop across the exterior. Colorful Accent Fins in blue, green, purple and yellow added dimension and personality to the façade. The bright accents helped create a lively appearance suited to a campus designed for students of different ages.
The completed school shows how Kingspan IMPs can combine thermal performance with creative design to make a large educational building feel welcoming and student-centered.
Walled Lake Central High School
Kingspan’s IMPs also played an important role in the renovation of Walled Lake Central High School in Michigan. After more than two decades of use, areas of the building were experiencing water intrusion. The project team needed a building envelope solution to address moisture issues while updating the school’s exterior.
More than 16,000 square feet of Kingspan QuadCore B Designwall 2000 panels were installed on the school’s classroom pods. The panels provided four layers of protection in one system. This helped the project team improve the performance of the existing building envelope without returning to a complex, multicomponent wall assembly.
The new panels also refreshed the school’s appearance. A modern color palette connected the renovated areas with the school’s identity, giving the building a renewed sense of pride and presence within the community.
Gilbert Place at Virginia Tech
Higher education projects come with their own set of demands, and Gilbert Place at Virginia Tech is a great example of how our panels rise to meet them. Developed by the Virginia Tech Foundation in downtown Blacksburg, Virginia, the $100 million, six-story, 256,000-square-foot building serves both the university and the surrounding community.
Architects faced a distinct challenge: blend the new building with an existing structure across the street and keep a six-story building from feeling like a single building. Their solution combined a wide range of claddings, including traditional brick, thin brick, single-skin panels, MCM panels, concrete panels, high-pressure compact panels and Hokie Stone, a native limestone quarried on Virginia Tech-owned land since 1869.
Behind that varied material palette is one constant: 95% of Gilbert Place's wall system is our KarrierPanel with QuadCore®, in Weathered Zinc and Bright Silver, delivering continuous insulation and a high-performing air and vapor barrier across the entire building. KarrierPanel's engineered KarrierRail system gave the design team the freedom to easily switch facade materials, helping them break up the building's mass and scale.
KarrierPanel also sped up construction. Because the building didn't need to be scaffolded from top to bottom, the contractor was able to dry the building in quickly and bring multiple trades on site at nearly the same time, keeping the project moving on a tight timeline.
